Sorry for the late entry, but I thought I could edit the website on the iPad (which I borrowed from the school to practice on....the kids know more than me!), but it does not have Adobe Flash....sigh. Technology is brilliant, when it's working!
This weekend, just reading. Quite a few students did not have their Super Story Map ready for Friday. If you are one of them, you need to have it ready for Monday.
We have started Multiplication in Math. On Friday I posed the question, "How many days have you attended school?". It was fascinating to see how some students assumed it was for Grade 4 only and other groups thought it was since they entered school. Up until now, the students have multiplied with one digit numbers, now they're going to be multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit. Watching children discuss math is truly remarkable. I will have to film it for you to see one day.
"Free Writing" is still a welcome phenomenon in our class. Give a child a gel pen, computer, blank/lined page and no script in which to write and it's amazing what happens. An observer in my class started asking students why they like it so much and several said, "It's like I'm emptying my mind. Everything I want to say is making room for things I have to say". All I can say is WOW!
Starting Monday, we are going to be reading "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever". We are focusing on character education and several reading strategies. My goal for this month is looking at the spirit of the season and how we can carry this throughout the year and to one another. Please, encourage your children to talk about this and to always think about how they would want to be treated. We are having a rash of students speaking very rudely to one another. I want to create a safe, calm, fun atmosphere where students feel like they can take chances and try new things.
